Americus History Trails

Take a walk with the Sumter Historic Trust and our digital tours!

Sumter County Courthouse showing the jail, ca. 1910

The "postcard tour" takes participants through downtown Americus, Georgia, using historic postcards as portals between past and present. This tour features 8 stops and is approximately .5 miles in length.

Marching for voting rights, Americus, 1965

This tour peers over the shoulders of the men, women, and children active in the Americus Movement (1962-66) who marched to make good on this country's promise of liberty and justice for all. This tour features 12 stops and incorporates sound and video.

Hancock-Eldridge House, 202 W College St., built 1854

Ready for a hike? Or want to learn from home? Focusing on residential buildings, this tour takes participants through a range of historic places in Americus from the 1850s through the 1990s. It demonstrates that buildings of all shapes, sizes, and ages can be historic. Unlike other Americus History Trails, this tour is not designed to be walked (it’s a 7.5-mile loop if you want to try!). Explore the sites however you like or find a site near you.

Lee Council House, 318 East Church Street, built 1901-1902

Digitized by popular demand! The Americus driving tour, created by the Sumter Historic Trust for the City of Americus decades ago, takes users through dozens of historic houses—most of which are “high style” architecture from the nineteenth- and early twentieth centuries. These properties are marked with signs indicating an approximate date of construction. Please visit the Americus Welcome Center for a physical copy of this tour.
